Eating for One

Before all this (she says, with a general sweep of her hand), I was careful about carbs. I avoided pasta and white flour and things that were too sugary. I know my body and I know how those foods make me feel (and look). The funny thing is that ever since the pregnancy symptoms hit, I’ve been craving these things full-force.

This evening my boyfriend went out to the gym while I lay on the couch riding the nausea waves. He offered to stay home, but I knew he wanted to go and really there was little he could do anyway so I sent him off on the promise that he stop at the grocery store to pick up a few apples for me. And some bagels. And maybe a box or two of mac n’ cheese (yeah the blue box kind). And potatoes.

It’s craziness!

It’s the exact opposite of everything that I normally eat, but I can’t help it. The only foods I can think about stomaching lately are starchy and creamy, and I think that’s OK. This thing is hard enough as it is without having to stick to whatever wacky diet regimens we usually follow. I’m not saying go overboard, but think about what you would really REALLY want right now and go for it. The pregnant moms-to-be do it ALL the time so why not the pregnant NOT-moms-to-be?

I’m not eating for two. I’m eating for me. Next week I’ll go back to chicken Caesar salads and high fiber cereal. For now, I just want the blue box.
