Smile!

Just got a note from another girl who literally *just* got back from her procedure and she said it went really well. I’m so happy that she had a good experience and it’s given me a bit more confidence for mine. I loved the awesome phrase she used to describe the way it felt (local anesthesia and a Valium cocktail). She said it was like having her “period on time-lapse video” and that it was a FAST five minutes. That sounds pretty good to me!

And I actually love the comparison to a period. I remember reading a passage in the Joan Didion book Play it as it Lays where the girl goes to get an abortion and the doctor tells her that what was happening was just her getting her period. He tells her that her next menstruation will happen in about 4 weeks and that what was “in the bucket” was “this month’s period.”

By the way, that book I just mentioned, while totally fantastic is also incredibly depressing and existential about itself so you might want to avoid until you’re feeling fabulous and like yourself again. It’s not about abortion, just about a woman with a very messy life. I think something more fun and light would be better now. Like a trashy romance, perhaps? Oooh or one of those yummy classics like Emma or Pride & Prejudice, which are always very good about leaving you feeling positive and excited about love and life (and ribbons—God those girls loved ribbons!).
